Debutant Siddharth Malhotra helmed adaptation of Hollywood film Stepmom began filming today, October 9, in the US. The film stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal.
Producer Karan Johar tweeted earlier in the day with the news:
the adaptation of stepmom co produced by sony pictures and dharma starts today!! kajol kareena and arjun…debut director siddharth malhotra
Kareena Kapoor will fill in for Julia Roberts as the step mother and Kajol will play Susan Sarandon’s role as the terminally ill mother. John Abraham, who was to play Ed Harris’ role as the father of two children, opted out and has been replaced by Arjun Rampal.
Kareena has been attending a workshop to prepare for her role as an ordinary career woman.
“The last time I rehearsed for a part it was for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara. But that was a more unconventional film and role where I had to get into a milieu and character I knew nothing about. But Stepmom is urban and very contemporary. I play a very normal metro-centric working girl. It should’ve been easier. I walk, talk, dress like an ordinary working girl. I’ll be using no makeup,” Kareena told Mumbai Mirror.
Back in June Johar reportedly dropped plans of lensing the Stepmom remake in Australia and opted for the US instead, in protest against the racial attacks on Indian students in Australia.
Kareena has recently wrapped up filming for Raj Kumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots with co-star Aamir Khan.
Last week Kajol wrapped up Karan Johar helmed and produced My Name is Khan with co-star Shah Rukh Khan.
