Kareena tired of playing blabbermouth characters

To repeat oneself is to gather rust. Perhaps Kareena Kapoor has realized this in time, for she’s taking a welcome break from playing the constantly chattering characters on screen. Who can forget the garrulous Geet of Jab We Met or the sassy Simrita of Kambakkht Ishq.

Now, Bebo is done with blabbering, at least for the time being. She’s now looking forward to the roles that bring forth her silent side.

In Raju Hirani’s 3 Idiots, for instance, she plays a very quiet and cultured character of a doctor dating an IIT student (played by Aamir Khan). She has few dialogues in the film and many of her scenes require her to react and act through expressions. Again, in director Rensil D’Silva’s Qurbaan she essays a silently simmering woman whose husband (played by Saif Ali Khan) is a terrorist.

Contrary to what you may think, Kareena claims that her real personality is very close to the “soft and gentle” characters she plays in the aforementioned films.

Gosh! We better stick to that proverb about silence being golden.

Akshay talks about the extrovert Simrita (Kareena’s screen name), his long lost co-star Aftab Shivdasani, fun being an incompatible couple, his lean figure, his sometimes violent fans and why he would also do films like ’8 X 10 Tasveer’ besides his comic capers.

Q. What happens when you meet an extrovert like Simrita?

I’d actually be offended. I’d not like to speak to that person and just walk off. I’d never try to be near her at all.

Q. ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ looks like a mad comic caper.

Not at all. First of all, it’s not a comic caper. It’s a romantic comedy. Yes, it has many comic moments but it’s also got love infused in it. Too much of romance is there in the film. It’s all about one-upmanship between the two sexes and who is dominant. It’s a superiority complex. The kind of dialogues we have with each other is the kind of dialogues you will relate to. Somewhere or the other it’ll remind you of the similar type of conversation you’ve had with a woman in your life. There aren’t many films of such nature which are being made in Hindi cinema. I believe that Men are from Mars and Women are from Heaven.

Q. You’ve worked with Aftab Shivdasani in ‘Awara Pagal Deewana‘. How is Affy now after you’ve last seen him a good, four to five years ago?

Affy can play these kinds of roles very easily like he played in ‘Awara Pagal Deewana’. He fits the ‘bechara’, ‘pyaar ka maara’ type of roles very well. You feel sorry for his character in the film. He is very true to his character in whichever film he performs. I loved him in ‘Kasoor’ where he played an obsessed lover alongside Lisa Ray. He was superb in the film.

Q. What’s the fun in being an incompatible couple?

The fun is what women think about men and what men think about women. We just say it openly about it. We curse each other which is great. We pull our leg, disagree with every word we say and that’s fun.

Q. Lean and fit is your fitness statement. You’re fit at 40 unlike others who’re still pumping iron to stay in shape.

I don’t think that’s right. I believe in having an athletic body more than a bulkier body. I am too natural when it comes to fitness. I do not pick up weights. Obviously, a body like me does help in terms of an action film and stunts. Most of my stunts are performed by me because of this athletic body. If I had bulging biceps, I could only bash somebody up.

Q. Why is there so much expectation surrounding your release always?

Because my fans expect a lot of fun and entertainment from Akshay Kumar. They’ve seen me in my last five years doing mad comedy. That’s the reason why. They come in search of masala, they come in search of laughter, they come in search of emotions here and there and they’ve got everything to take back home with them after watching my comic films. And when they didn’t get ’8 X 10 Tasveer’, they got disappointed. No masti, fun, laughter. I need to do different films to get into a different mode. Films like ’8 X 10 Tasveer’ satisfy me as an actor. I’m very proud of Nagesh.

I love being in love: Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor is hooked on to the idea of being in love. She gave a glimpse of her sensitive side recently when she was asked about her role in her forthcoming movie Kambakkht Ishq.

She says, “My character in the movie hates men and is against love. She is a hardened feminist who thinks men are dogs. I’m not anything like her in real life. I am neither a feminist nor a tough nut to crack. I’m not insensitive to my partner’s feelings.” She adds, “I love the idea of being in love and I cannot be rude or harsh to anyone.”

Kareena plays the role of supermodel Simrita, who is a feminist in the movie. She locks horns with her co-star Akshay Kumar in a battle of sexes.

“I love the part when this hard-hearted girl actually falls in love with Akshay. My character goes through change like any other person in real life and the change is quite realistic.”

Incidentally this is Kareena’s seventh film with Akshay. She says, “I know Akshay from his first shot in Bollywood. He has done more than 10 films with my sister (Karisma Kapur). He is my favourite co-star by a long way. I feel so comfortable and relaxed to act with him that shooting becomes fun.”

Kareena has also changed her body type for the movie. “The role required me to be fuller and more style-conscious and I have done exactly that. It’s very challenging to change your body type but as an actor that’s what you want to do – always challenge yourself,” she says.

She ends by saying, “Tashan required me to have a bikini body and I did exactly that. This movie wanted me to be different and I did that. Even in future I’ll don whatever look my film-maker wants.”
